A book with stunning photos about food and culture in Laos

Food From Northern Laos

I like food and I like books but books about food are not my favorite. So why mention here the book "Food From Northern Laos"? Well it is not only a book about food, it is about a way of life that is disappearing, even in Laos. And more amazingly the recipes are written & the food is made by Dorothy Culloty from New Zealand. Not the kind of person you would expect cooking local Lao food in a kitchen in the Isaan. And secondly because the recipes come with great photos from the Dutch photographer Kees Sprengers about life & food in Laos.

While on a trip in the Isaan I did meet them at the house of a friend of mine when they returned from a Laos trip. They brought food with them and in the afternoon Dorothy started to cook for a house of 10 consisting of Western and Thai people. And the Thai people were looking "What? She is cooking Lao food like our grand parents did?" but once the food was served they were all eating with a big smile. And then the beautiful photos made by Kees Sprengers makes you really want to go to Lao. For more information see Food From Northern Laos
