Travel Tips : How to go to Koh Samet?

As I do hear and read many questions about how to go to the island Koh Samet I thought I will make a posting about it. Well, first of all you have to get to Ban Phe, the old fishing village where the ferry piers to Koh Samet are. Ban Phe is just 200 km south-east of Bangkok and actually a nice place with a busy market street and some good restaurants.

As Koh Samet is not far from Bangkok where about 12 mil. people are living you can reckon that in the weekend it can be busy with Thai tourists. So if you go on Friday or Saturday make a hotel reservation. Also be aware that in the weekend hotels are more expensive. And you should know that Koh Samet is part of a National Park so you have to pay entrance fee to get any further as the main-pair at the Island.

Getting from Ban Phe to Koh Samet

There are many private piers (with secure parking) and 1 public pier. On all piers you can take a slow (old fishing) boats or a speedboat. The slow ferry boat will bring you in 30 min to the main ferry pier on the island (Na Dan Pier), while a speedboat will do that in 20 min. Time & distance vary of course on the destination of the beach or hotel where you want to go. Speedboats are rented per boat, for going and getting back. When buying tickets for the normal ferry you can also buy return tickets (same boat). There are going normal ferry boats and speedboats to almost all the beaches. When arriving at Ban Phe ignore all the touts that offer to "help" you. They are just trying to sell you a hotel.
