Worshiping at the city pillar shrine in Khon Kaen city

Almost every city in Thailand has a city pillar and they have become / are a kind of shrine. Not only do they symbolise the establishment of a new city, they also house the spirits of the city deities. Later the city pillars became a sign of cultural heritage and symbol of national pride.

Although living in Khon Kaen now for about 5 years we had never visit the city pillar of Khon Kaen. Something that was corrected last week.

All day there are people worshiping the spirits and city pillars (and of course hopefully gaining good-luck to buy lottery tickets).

In Khon Kaen the city pillar is located at the one and only round-about of the city and next to it is most evening a movie projection for people to watch free movies. This time even 3 movies next to each other at the same time! Unfortunately not the old-fashioend 35-mm movie projection but nowadays just a digital projection.
