The new night train from Chiang Mai to Bangkok

The new night train from Chiang Mai to Bangkok

Since about 6 months the State Railway of Thailand is using new trains for some of the night-trains between Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Currently the 17:00 train leaving from Chiang Mai to Bangkok is still the old train, but at 18:00 it is the new train. So last week I travelled with the new train from Chiang Mai to Bangkok for the first time myself. It was a pleasant experience. Not so noisy, 3 toilets per wagon, plenty of baggage storage room, every bed has a power-plug and every 2 seats have their own table. And the train is being cleaned the all time while traveling. Lights are dimmed at night. But yes it is still cold! In the wagon were 40 "seats" for sleeping (beds). Between 20:00 and 21:00 the beds were prepared for sleeping. Every upper-bed has a small foldable ladder to help you to get into your bed. And there is a good restaurant-wagon with a good coffee espresso machine. And serving good Thai food. Following are some photos of the interior of the train. We were traveling second-class air-conditioned (what was a bit chilly).
