Traveling from Nan to Hanoi, Vietnam

Traveling to Thailand
Driving from Pua to Nan

The first step of traveling 3 weeks Relaxed Vietnam was of course traveling from Nan in North Thailand to Hanoi in Noord Vietnam. From Nan there are 2 options, first option is to go first to Chiang Mai (350km) and then fly to Hanoi. Second option is to fly to Bangkok (1 hour and 10 minutes) and then to Hanoi. I did choose the second option. So I first had to drive from Pua to Nan, about 60km and it took about 1 hour driving in the slightly rain. Yes, the raining season has arrived! From Nan Nakhon Airport I did fly with Air Asia to Don Muang Airport. (keep reading under the photo).

Air Asia on Nan Nakhon Airport in Nan, Thailand

After arriving at Don Muang Domestic Terminal I first had to collect my luggage and then walk to the International Terminal of Don Muang Airport. Easy, just follow the signs (see following photos). Once at the International Terminal I had to wait a hour before I could check-in my luggage (thank you Air Asia). After check-in I went thru immigration where a very friendly immigration officer offered me to get a re-entry permit available after immigration. Then thru safety check and finally at the shopping area behind immigration & customs. Be aware that there are no ATM's here, so if you need money you have to get it before you go to immigration. While waiting at the gate a big rainfall and lighting was passing the airport.

After a smooth flight I arrived at Noi Bai International Airport at Hanoi, Vietnam. This is a modern and very well managed airport. Before immigration I had to pickup my visa (25us$), this took my about 5min. Be aware that you can now apply for an E-Visa and can skip the pickup of the visa. Immigration was a smooth 3min waiting and within 30min after arriving I did pickup my luggage. The first thing I did at the arrival hall was changing some us$ to Vietnamese Dong (VND) and get myself a Vietnamese sim-card. So after about 1 hour I was walking to a taxi (see last photo below) to bring me to my hotel in Hanoi. Another smooth taxi ride of about 45min and I arrived late in the evening at my hotel. Time for a late dinner and a good night sleep! Following is a serie of photos to guide you thru Don Muang Airport and a little bit of Noi Bai Airport.

Travel Tips :
  • Do web check-in before flying.
  • If possible travel with hand-luggage only.
  • If you have to go from Don Muang Domestic Terminal to Don Muang International Terminal then allow 1 - 2 hours between flights.
  • Get US$ before you are flying to Vietnam to pay for your Visa.
