Staying at The Riverie (by Katathani) in Chiang Rai
Last week we we did stay for a night at The Riverie Hotel in Chiang Rai, what is an older and big hotel right along the Kok River at Chiang Rai town. I say older because I know this hotel from many moons ago but in 2018 it was totally renovated under management of Katathani. So of course this hotel has everything you might need. Two bars/lounges, 3 restaurants, swimming pool, fitness, spa, massage, private parking, a huge tropical garden but most of all comfortable luxury rooms. And a great breakfast buffet! All good reason to spoil ourselves for 1 night in Chiang Rai. At least that was the all idea of staying for 1 night, but it did go a bit differently.
I checked out reviews of the hotel via Booking and TripAdvisor and then my wife called them to ask for a promotion. But as they did not have that we did book via Booking and with that the hotel did just lose the commission that is paid to Booking. We arrived in the afternoon and were pleasantly surprised by the hotel grounds that is like a park with many big & old trees. At the lobby we were greeted by the staff and our luggage was taken care off. After a quick & efficient check-in we did go to our room on the 5th floor with stunning view over the skyline of the mountains surrounding Chiang Rai town. Our luggage was brought to our room by a friendly bell-boy. The quality & modern decoration of the room showed that renovation was done for 100%, I love that. We had an extra big king-sized bed, a sofa and a beautiful bathroom with shower.
After a rest we had a cocktail & snack in the lobby bar and we checked out the huge swimming pool in the garden along the Kok River. At about 18:00 we went to the rooftop restaurant on the 10th floor where we first had a drink before ordering our dinner. We both had a delicious Australian Tenderloin beefsteak and a glass of house wine. Food, service and ambiance were fantastic, we had a great evening.
After a good night sleep we did go for breakfast. And here at least I had a big disappointment, because one of the reasons to book this hotel and pay the somewhat higher price is that this hotel advertise to have a wonderful breakfast buffet. And this was confirmed by a friend of mine who stayed here a week before us. But to my surprise there was a very limited buffet and we were offered a limited menu for plate service. We were told that this was done because there were not many people in the hotel at that moment. Although the management later tried to convince me that this is the New Normal due to the Corona. So I wanted to have a cup of tea but did find only hot water and I had to ask for tea bags. A ritual that had to be repeated when I wanted a second cup of tea. No staff that came to ask if I wanted more tea. Later we were informed that we could order anything that would be normally on the buffet. But how would we know what was normally on the buffet?
The bottom-line is that the service & quality of this hotel was very good. From the moment we arrived and checked-in to the moment we check-out. We had a very good dinner on the rooftop and the hotel is worth the price you pay. But ...... that all was ruined by the way the breakfast buffet we done. Not only the fact that it was a very limited "international" breakfast buffet. But also the way the limited breakfast buffet was setup. This is not why I did book this hotel and pay a not so cheap price for a room in this hotel.
And yes I understand it is not economical feasible to serve a huge international breakfast buffet when you not have much customers. But we paid the full price, in what is normally a full international breakfast buffet included. So management should find another way to satisfy customers.
