Shopping at the Bo Bia Border Market along the Thai-Lao border

Traveling in North Thailand

Reposting from 2017. Bo Bia Border Market is located in the district of Ban Khok in Uttradit province. Every Sunday there is an very early morning market where Lao people come to buy things from Thai people. The market is located in a kind of no-mans-land between Laos and Thailand where both claim it is their territory. This twist goes back to time that the French were occupying Laos and Thailand granted them some land to make them stop going further into Thailand. So there is even an all village in no-mans-land but as foreigner I have no access to that (yet).

There is some kind of border check from both sides, but it is not an international border check-point with friendly Thai immigration guy as I could use his office to leave my helmet and leather jacket. Most people where just local Thai and Lao people, but there were a few Thai tourists (with big Canon SLR camera's) and 1 totally lost European guy (me). After Sunday the area is totally forgotten by everybody, except for the some soldiers from the Thai army base.

The journey of Traveling 2 Thailand did begin with One Night in Bangkok in 1985 and since 2009 it became a personal non-commercial travel blog as inspiration for traveling & motorbike riding in Thailand. Made just for the sheer love of traveling and sharing experience about traveling in South-East Asia. To travel beyond the beaten track & highlights. Enjoy!
