Travel Tips in 2016 for Krabi in South Thailand. Krabi is a popular beach destination in South Thailand, most people go to Ao Nang beach. But there is much more to Krabi as Ao Nang beach, so following is some information about Krabi. Krabi town is the capital town of Krabi province in Southern Thailand along the Andaman coast. It is along a stunning coast line of limestone mountains and mangrove forrest with many beaches and islands within reach. One of the most popular beach destinations of Thailand!

How to get there?

  • Airplane : Krabi has it own airport (KBV) and can be reached domestic from Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Koh Samui. And international from Singapore, Malaysia and China.
  • Train : The nearest major train-station is Surat Thani and from there you can take the bus. 
  • Bus : You can take the bus to Krabi from example Bangkok, Hat Yai, Phuket, Hua Hin.

Choosing where to stay in Krabi

Now it gets tricky .... there are many beaches / islands an other stunning places to stay and they differ very much in style and accommodation. First of all you should choose mainland or islands. Of course you could also stay in Krabi town and enjoy real southern Thai hospitality & culture.

Of course there are many more beaches but no hotels & resorts. Some of the beaches can only be reached by boat.

Transport in Krabi

There is limited public transport between and along the most favourite beaches. Example there is an Airport Shuttle Bus to Ao Nang beach. And at Ao Nang beach are a kind of Tuk-Tuks and there is Song-theaw service. There are also taxi-meters but the meters seem no to be working. And there are private taxi's and mini-vans. And of course you can rent scooters or a car.

Some beaches on the mainland can not be reaches by road (as there is no road) so you will have to take a boat from one of the piers. Example Ton Sai and Railay beach can only be reached by boat from a pier at Ao Nang beach. Of course all island can only be reached by boat from one of the piers at Ao Nang beach. For island-trips there are options of a kind of ferry, speed-boat or longtail-boat.

What to do in Krabi?

Sit on the beach, read a book, make boat-trips, rock climbing, visit temples (Tiger Cave Temple), hiking in the jungle, Kayak in mangrove forest, diving, snorkelling, have a massage, party at the nightlife of Ao Nang and eat delicious Southern Thai food.

Hotels in Krabi

With so many beaches & islands in Krabi it might be hard to choose. Have a look at some hotel-bookings web-site and google a bit. There are hotels starting from simple guesthouses to luxury private 5* resorts. But check the location ... because I have seen cheap hotels but in the middle of nowhere (and not at the beach at all)!

Airport of Krabi

The airport is located a bit out of anything. There is a Airport Shuttle bus service and there are taxis with fixed prices (no meter taxi or TukTuks). For a taxi go to the taxi-counter. The airport has 2 buildings, Terminal 1 (International) and Terminal 2 (Domestic). So Nok Air check-in is at Terminal 2. But as Air Asia is also flying international their  check-in is at Terminal 1 (also for domestic check-in). There is a covered walking promenade between the buildings of about 100m. At the domestic departure gates are a few basic coffee-shops, no real restaurants. So if you want to eat before flying you will have to do that before going to the departure gates.
