Sunset from The Tongsai Bay Resort on Koh Samui, Thailand

Here a list of my recommendation of the ever-growing selection of boutique hotels, luxury hotel hideaways and romantic retreats at stunning locations in Thailand. So here is my selection of 22 of my favourite hotels in Thailand where I have stayed while traveling in the tropical holiday destination Thailand. Some of the places are stunning & luxurious resorts while others are just very unique or at a stunning location. But none of the hotels are over the top as of price. Do you think I missed one? Share your favourite Thai hotel with me and I will try to cover it soon. The star rating is my personal rating based of facilities, room comfort & quality, staff service and their location.

1. Bangkok along the Chao Phraya - Navalai Resort ****
Swimming pool of Navalai Boutique Resort in Bangkok, Thailand
Navalai Resort is a luxury riverside hotel along the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok and surly when staying for the first time in Bangkok you should stay along the Chao Phraya River and see the real Venice of Asia. Nowadays there are many luxury hotels along the Chao Phraya like the famous Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel, Shangri-La Hotel, The Peninsula Hotel, The Siam Hotel or Millennium Hilton Hotel. And also some small boutique hotels like Riva Arun Boutique Hotel, Chakrabongse Villas and Aurum The River Place. But my personal favourite is the small and great located Navalai Resort. Great location because it is within walking distance from an Express-boat pier, so it is easy to explore Bangkok. And it is within walking distance of outskirts of the famous Chinatown & Khao San road. And as being a smaller hotel it has more personal charm and good value for money. Be advised that not all rooms have river view.

2. Bangkok Sukhumvit road - Pullman Bangkok Grande Sukhumvit *****
Deluxe room at Pullman Grand Sukhumvit Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand
The Pullman Bangkok Grande Sukhumvit is a grand city hotel conveniently located within walking distance from public transport BTS & MRT and within walking distance from shopping malls like Terminal 21. When you like to stay in modern & trendy Bangkok, nearby shopping malls and nightlife then staying along Sukhumvit road is the best place. Nowadays there are many luxury hotels along Sukhumvit road like Grand Center Point Terminal 21, The Continent Bangkok, Hilton Sukhumvit Hotel, Double Tree Sukhumvit Hotel, Grand Sukhumvit Hotel, JW Marriott Hotel, Pullman Grand Sukhumvit and Radisson Blu Plaza Hotel. And of course there are also hidden boutique hotels along Sukhumvit road like Ariyasom Villa, Cabochon Hotel and Ad Lib Boutique Hotel. But I like the strategic location of the Pullman Bangkok Grande Sukhumvit, easy to walk to the BTS & MRT at Asoke and to go from there to anywhere within Bangkok. And nearby shopping malls and good restaurants, although also in the hotel are some very good restaurants. And the wonderful staff always make you feel home. The Pullman Bangkok Grande Sukhumvit offers 4 restaurants and 1 Club Lounge, Spa & Massage, Swimming pool (but a bit small), free wifi in the all hotel and private parking.

3. Bang Saray - Sea, Sand & Sun Resort *****
Beach at Sea, Sand & Sun Resort in Pattaya, Thailand
The Sea, Sand & Sun Resort is an oase of quietness and a tranquil yet luxurious haven of natural beauty facing the Gulf of Thailand. And although said to be in Pattaya it is actually 20km south of the concrete and hedonism of Pattaya. It is just 2hrs from Bangkok or 90min from Suvarnabhumi Airport. And that makes it a great place for a weekend break-away from hectic Bangkok. With a wonderful beach, swimming pool, good restaurants and friendly staff there is no reason to leave the resort. Just sit down, relax and enjoy the moments together with your beloved one or family. And in the evening have diner at the restaurant Horizon and watch a stunning sunset. My personal favourite rooms are he bungalows right along the beach. Be advised that Sea, Sand & Sun Resort is best visited by private transport.

4. Chiang Rai - Le Patta Hotel ***+
Garden of Le Patta Hotel in Chiang Rai, North Thailand
Le Patta Hotel is a small boutique hotel located right in the heart of Chiang Rai, within walking distance from the famous Golden Clock Tower, Night Market and Weekend Market. With cozy & comfortable rooms, a small garden with swimming pool and friendly staff this is the best place in Chiang Rai town center. All rooms have private bathroom with rain shower, air-conditioning, mini bar and safety box. Although there are a few other hotels in Chiang Rai town center this hotel is my favourite because of the friendly & service minded staff, the wonderful breakfast at their Thai-European fusion restaurant and the high quality & comfortable rooms. La Patta Hotel offers free wifi, airport transfer, private parking and bicycle rental to explore Chiang Rai town.

5. Chiang Rai - Rai Seang Arun Resort ****
Riverside bungalow at Rai Seang Arun Resort in Chiang Rai, North Thailand
The Rai Seang Arun Resort is in Chiang Rai province, located about 100km from Chiang Rai town. The name translates as Sunrise over the rice-fields and the Rai Seang Arun Resort is a place to experience the sight of the mountains along the Mekong River as border between Laos and Thailand. With an open-air restaurant along the Mekong River serving home grown organic vegetables and in the cool season a sea of fog will cover the Mekong River in the early morning while you wake up on your private balcony. The teak wooden bungalows of this Rai Seang Arun Resort are partly right along the Mekong River overlooking Laos on the other side of the Mekong River. And the other rooms are in between the rice-fields on the hills along the Mekong River. Recommended to stay at one of the bungalows right along the Mekong River with huge teak wooden verandah and open-air shower. Be advised that Rai Seang Arun Resort is best visited by private transport.

6. Chiang Rai - Lanjia Lodge ***
The Lanjia Lodge is a eco-friendly community-based lodge nestled in the mountains of Chiang Rai and the name means peaceful in the Hmong language. No it is not a luxury resort but the lodge is at a stunning and very special location in a Hmong hill-tribe village overlooking the Mekong River & Laos in a far distance. The lodge has only 2 rooms (with each a private bathroom) and no swimming pool. The rooms are simple but comfortable and made in local traditional style. But you do not come here for the accommodation but for the experience of staying in a local hill-tribe Eco Lodge and that the contributions from your stay will be used on community projects that will improve the local hill tribe people’s living conditions. So Lanjia Lodge does not offer a swimming pool or club lounge but offers a walking tour in the Hmong village and the nearby Lishu village where you will see & experience the traditional local way of living. Or lovely nature trail walking tours nearby the villages. Be advised that the Lanjia Lodge is best visited by private transport.

8. Kanchanaburi - River Kwai Jungle Rafts ***+
At the River Kwai Jungle Rafts you can let your worries float away on the River Kwai at this tranquil jungle raft resort and explore nearby caves & waterfalls. Or just sit & relax at your verandah while your swimming pool is passing by. The River Kwai Jungle Rafts, the original floating hotel in Kanchanaburi, is not just a place to stay or sleep but a destination to experience to enjoy, learn and relax in the green lush jungle of Kanchanaburi. This place is about 70km from Kanchanaburi town and can only be reached by a last 10min ride with a longtail boat. Staying at the River Kwai Jungle Rafts is going back to nature without electricity, telephone signal or internet. I have stayed here many times and although I am also always happy to go back to civilisation I highly recommend this place for 2 nights. Be advised that the River Kwai Jungle Rafts is best visited by private transport to the private pier of the River Kwai Jungle Rafts. Recommended to buy your favourite drinks & snacks at the last 7-11 you will see about 15min before arriving at the private pier. I rated River Kwai Jungle Rafts as 3 star plus although based on facilities, room comfort & quality is should be 2 stars but based on location it should be 5 stars.

9. Kanchanaburi - Royal River Kwai Resort ****
The Royal River Kwai Resort with a beautiful huge tropical garden is located on the banks of the famous Kwai River, on the outskirts of Kanchanaburi town. A great place to indulge yourself in luxury & comfort with a huge swimming pool and riverside restaurant while exploring the history & green jungle of Kanchanaburi province. 10. Koh Kuud - Sunshine Resort ***+
Beach at Sunshine Resort at Koh Kuud - Thailand
The Sunshine Resort is at the fourth largest & pristine island Koh Kuud in Trat province. And the Sunshine Resort is at the most southern point of the island, almost bordering Cambodia, at the 950m long white sand beach of Ao Phrao Bay with crystal clear water. The great thing about Koh Kuud is, is that it is not yet overrun by tourism & greedy business, like most Thai islands were 20 years ago. The Sunshine Resort is a family business of people living here for many generations. The rooms are bungalows in a huge tropical garden and all have a private balcony. But if you are expecting a 5 star resort with swimming pool, 5 restaurants and a spa then you are at the wrong place. The Sunshine Resort is a simple family managed hotel. But if you are expecting paradise you are at the perfect place. The Sunshine Resort is located at one of the best beaches of Koh Kuud from where you have a stunning sunset view over the sea. Simply paradise. Don't tell your friends! Be advised that Koh Kuud is best to be visited during the end of the cool season and during the hot season. You will have to travel to the pier in Trat town and take the morning ferry to Koh Kuud.

Private teak wooden verandah at The Tongsai Bay Resort at Koh Samui, Thailand
The family owned Tongsai Bay Resort is located on the tropical island of Koh Samui in the Gulf of Thailand at a more or less private beach & bay. Although nowadays there are many luxury resorts on Koh Samui, The Tongsai Bay Resort was one of the first truly small & luxury resorts on Koh Samui. With teak wooden bungalows build in a huge tropical garden A great place to celebrate a special occasion or to escape busy life. So if you want to pamper yourself and indulge in comfort on your private verandah with gazebo and jacuzzi then this is the place to be at Koh Samui. Your days at The Tongsai Bay Resort are not only about luxury but also about wonderful service minded staff, delicious food and feeling home in a small scale resort. Not only a great place for a honeymoon or even marriage but also a great place for family or friends traveling with friends. As proven by many returning guests, a well known best compliment to any hotel. Koh Samui can be reached with a 1 hour flight from Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok.

Tub Kaek Sunset Beach Resort is an undiscovered paradise in an otherwise famous beach destination of Krabi, surrounded by a exotic tropical garden at the white sandy pristine beach along the Andaman Sea of Southern Thailand. This is where the small beach of Ao Kaek in Krabi province is with only 4 luxury resorts along a dead-end road. Waking up on your own, almost private beach and spend your day relaxing at the beach or swimming pool. Or if you like adventure make a day-trip to the nearby islands. View from Baan See See Mountain View Hotel in Mae Salong, North Thailand
Baan See See Mountain View Hotel is build in apartment style and the hotel itself is not its main attraction but the location in the formerly Chinese Kuomintang (KMT) village of Doi Mae Salong high in the mountains of North Thailand. Because the location right in de middle of this cute mountain village is the biggest plus. In the evening you can walk to a restaurant or tea/coffee house and in the early morning you walk to the local market. A great way to explore village and the local way of life. And from almost all rooms you have a stunning view over the mountains & village of Doi Mae Salong. Rooms are a bit basic, so recommended to stay in the upper rooms of the new building, all with private balcony. 19. Pattaya - Amari Ocean Tower *****
Room at Amari Ocean Tower in Pattaya, Thailand
Although Pattaya might be famous for many other things there are actually many high-end hotels like Woodlands Resort or the Inter-Continental Pattaya Beach Resort. But my favourites is Amari Ocean Tower at the north side of Pattaya town and right along the beach boulevard, within walking distance of soon the openend Terminal 21 shopping mall, Tiffany Show and Alcazar. Wonderful big rooms, delicious breakfast, huge tropical garden and great staff. And although you are in the middle of Pattaya town you do not notice much of it. And if you want to go somewhere you just walk outside and take a Song-theauw (taxi). Recommended a room on a high floor and with ocean view.

Update from Amari Ocean Tower : As part of the continuous efforts to enhance your experience at Amari Pattaya, the hotel will be embarking on an exciting refurbishment programme from April 2017 to December 2018. Upon completion, you can look forward to a brand-new all-suite wing, transformed lobby, public areas, Kids Club and free-form swimming pool. The hotel will also introduce an innovative Asian street food inspired all-day dining concept, the Amaya Food Gallery. Please rest assured that the swimming pool, Essence and Mantra restaurants will remain open.

20. Pattaya - Thai Garden Resort ****
Swimming pool at night at Thai Garden Resort in Pattaya, Thailand
The Thai Garden Resort is under German & Dutch management and is located at the north side of Pattaya town bordering Naklua, just 900m from Pattaya Bay. And within walking distance of the soon to be opened Terminal 21 shopping mall. It might be a bit older resort but it is a very well taken care of resort and constantly updated & renovated. The Thai Garden Resort has a huge tropical garden with a big 63m long swimming pool and most of all the resort has the most service minded staff you can think of. So if you are looking for comfort, hospitality and courteous service at affordable rates, you came to the right place at the Thai Garden Resort. The all hotel is low-rise with big rooms and big bathrooms. And some part of the hotel & a limited number of rooms is made wheelchair friendly. Of course all spacious rooms have Private bathroom, TV, Air-conditioning, Mini bar, Free drinking water and some rooms have Private balcony. 21. Pattaya Naklua - Cape Dara Resort *****
The Cape Dara Resort is located right along Wong Amat Beach in Pattaya-Naklua and although I do not understand why this high-rise hotel is called a resort I think it is one of the best hotels in Pattaya-Naklua. At Cape Dara Resort they offer you the lifestyle of your choice with a wide range of first class facilities like Spa, Kids Club, two Swimming pools, Yoga class and the Dara Club Lounge. And with 26 floors the rooms on the higher floors have a stunning view over the bay of Pattaya. Some room types even have their own Jacuzzi on the private balcony. With a bakery and restaurants serving delicious food & wine, an infinity swimming pool and a stunning sunset Cape Dara Resort is the perfect place to stay. And if you wish you can rent bicycles to explore the neighbourhood.

22. Sukhothai - Sukhothai Heritage Resort *****
Lobby of the Sukhothai Heritage Resort in Sukhothai, Thailand
The Sukhothai Heritage Resort is located near Sukhothai Airport and that is great if you arrive by airplane but it is also 40km from Sukhothai Historical Park. But that disadvantage is ample compensated by the beautiful Sukhothai architecture style of the hotel, the stunning swimming pools, the delicious food at their restaurant and the always service minded staff. After a long & hot day visiting Sukhothai Historical Park this is the best place in Sukhothai to wind down and relax while enjoying a good glass of wine or a cocktail in the open-air bar or restaurant. From beautiful superior rooms to suite rooms with Jacuzzi, you can find it all at this truly 5 star resort. When staying here the first time I had not expected such a professional managed hotel in the middle of almost nowhere, until I realised that of course one of the most prestige travel & hospitality companies of Thailand is behind it.
