In December 2021 I made a motorbike trip in North Thailand and did visit Phu An Ma near Chiang Kham, Phayao province in North Thailand. Phu An Ma is a mountain top and part of a ridge on the mountains of Phayao province. The top is said to be 1.658m above sea-level, although my GPS said 1.620m. Never mind it is a stunning location, with a 360° view over the the all province and nearby Nan province and even Laos. Phu An Ma is located along route 1345, that starts it Chiang Kham. But you can also get to route 1345 with route 4029 from route 1148, and that is what I did this time.
I had been here before (see Making detour to Phu An Ma) but then I was too tired to climb all the way up, but this time I had time and energy to do it. Now 1.658m high sounds like a big climb but reality is that there is a huge parking at 1.573m. But be aware that the last 10 km of route 1345 is a narrow road with some steep parts. And that the last 300m of the road to the parking is very narrow, steep and has 1 sharp curve. At the parking is a walking path with steps up to the top. Said to be 200m walking but going up about 90m. On my motorbike boots and wearing my motorbike trousers it took me about 30min. And I loved it! All alone on top of the world! A great place for camping, although you will have to carry everything up. No sherpa's here. Following are some photo's I took.
